Lock Change & Rekey

Rekey or replace? We'll tell you straight

Rekeying changes the pins inside your existing lock so a new key works and the old ones don't. It's usually the fastest and most affordable option when your locks are in good shape.

Replacing makes sense when a lock is worn, damaged, low-quality, or when you want to upgrade to high-security or smart hardware. We'll look at what you have and recommend the option that actually makes sense, not the most expensive one.

What we do

When to change your locks

You just moved in

You don't know how many copies of the old keys are out there.

A key was lost or stolen

Rekey right away so a found key is useless.

Tenant turnover

Change the cylinder between tenants. We work with landlords and supers.

A roommate or employee left

Take back control of who has access.

Too many keys

Rekey everything to work with one key.

After a break-in

Replace damaged hardware and upgrade if needed.

How it works

How a lock change & rekey job goes

  1. Rekey or replace?

We look at your locks and tell you honestly which option makes sense.

  2. New pins or new cylinder

Old keys stop working the moment we're done.

  3. Fresh keys cut

New keys cut and tested on the spot, keyed alike if you want.

Is rekeying cheaper than replacing?

Usually, yes. Rekeying reuses your existing hardware, so you only pay for labor and new keys. Replacing costs more but lets you upgrade.

Can every lock be rekeyed?

Most pin-tumbler locks can. Some cheap or damaged locks are better replaced, and we'll tell you if that's the case.

Can you make all my locks use one key?

Yes. That's called keying alike, and we can usually do it during the same visit if the locks share a compatible keyway.

Can I bring my lock cylinder to the shop?

Yes. Bring the cylinder to our Astoria shop and we can rekey it while you wait in most cases.
